Pellet Gun takes his 16th Championship


     Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm, EAU CLAIRE, MI (July 2, 2016). In an great show of mettle, Rick "Pellet Gun" Krause, 62, hobbled to the spitter's box, popped a cherry in his mouth, and spat a pit the winning distance, 48' 2-1/4", to take his 16th world championship in cherry pit spitting at the 43rd International Cherry Pit Spitting Championship held today.

     For the first time in the Championship history, the majority (six) of the top ten spitters during the morning Qualification Round were female, and four of those between 14 and 19 years of age. One of four men to qualify was also under 19. Previous international champions are automatically qualified for participation in the Championship Round. Richard Bartz, 1977 Champ, Brian Krause, 10-time Champ, Rick Krause, now 16-time Champ, and 2015 Champ Kevin Bartz were the previous winners who competed in the 2016 Championship. 

     World record holder and son of Pellet Gun, Brian "Young Gun" Krause, 38, Lansing, MI took second, and last year's champion, Kevin Bartz, Niles, 49, took 3rd place.

     The afternoon Championship contest includes the top ten spitters (by distance) from the morning Qualification Round. After the Qualification Round closes at noon, contestants with the top ten distances fill the ten Championship slots. Among the women who qualified for the Championship were, Megan Ankrapp, 16, Buchanan, 2015 Women's Champ. Ms Ankrapp spat 23' 10-3/4" in this year's Championship contest.

     The 2016 Womens Division winner was Chloe Bartz, 15, Buchanan. Ms Bartz won youth championships prior to her Women's Division win in 2014. Duane McLaughlin, 5, Berrien Springs, won the 5 and under youth division with a spit-acular 10’ 8-1/2” cherry pit spit. Alex Marek, 7, Traverse City, MI, took the Youth 6-8 year old contest with a 14’ 6-1/2” distance, and Josh Hester, 9, Coloma, MI won the 9-12 year old competition with a spit of 34' 1/2". Berrien County Trial Court Judge Sterling Schrock won the Dignitary Division with a spit of 23’ 3”.

  Madeline Schrock, St. Joseph, MI, opened the festivities with the National Anthem. Berrien County Trial Court Judges John Donahue and Sterling Schrock served as Official Timekeeper and Line Judge, respectively. Jim Tipton, of Tipton Construction, was the Height Measurement Judge. Leona Foster, Ann Arbor, MI was the Distance Judge and Monica Teichman, Eau Claire, the Official Scorekeeper. Mr. Cherry Pit Spit - A.K.A. Mr. Eau Claire/Sodus -- Dalton Moyer -- led the Pit Sweeper team of Alex and Austin Merek, Traverse City, MI while Miss Cherry Pit Spit Michelle King, the reigning  Miss Eau Claire/Sodus; Toni Dunn, Miss Congeniality; and Mary Ankrapp, Buchanan, managed the contestant preparation area. Lynne Sage, Morrice, MI, was Spit-by-Spit Announcer and Host. Nancy Tipton coordinated the event preparation.
